How is dog age in human years calculated?
The idea that you simply multiply a dog's age by 7 is an old myth with no scientific basis. Modern veterinary research shows that dogs age at very different rates depending on their size:
- Small dogs (under 9kg) tend to live longer and age more slowly in their later years.
- Giant breeds (over 40kg) age faster and have shorter lifespans on average.
- All dogs age very rapidly in their first two years — a 1-year-old dog is equivalent to roughly a 15-year-old human.
