How Often Should You Flea Treat Your Dog?
The answer depends on which product you're using:
- Monthly spot-ons (Frontline, Advantage, Stronghold) — treat every 28 days, not every month. Months have different lengths; 28 days is more accurate.
- 3-monthly tablets (Bravecto) — treat every 12 weeks
- Annual injections — prescribed by your vet, given once a year
- Flea collars (Seresto) — effective for up to 8 months, then replace
The most common mistake UK dog owners make is treating in April, then again in October, and nothing in between. This leaves a 6-month gap where your dog — and your home — is unprotected.
Why Year-Round Treatment Matters in the UK
Fleas need warmth to breed. In warmer climates this is seasonal. But in the UK, our central heating keeps living rooms at 18–22°C all year — which is the perfect temperature for flea eggs to hatch.
A single flea can lay up to 50 eggs per day. Those eggs fall off your dog and into your carpets, sofas, and bedding. By the time you see fleas on your dog, there are already hundreds of eggs in your home.

How to Know If Your Dog Has Fleas
Look for:
- Scratching, especially around the neck, tail base, and belly
- Small black specks in your dog's coat (flea dirt — actually digested blood)
- Red, irritated skin

The "flea dirt" test: put the specks on a damp white tissue. If they turn red, it's flea dirt. Your dog has fleas.

- Wash all bedding at 60°C
- Vacuum every room thoroughly, including under sofas and along skirting boards

Don't Forget Worming
Fleas and worms are linked. Dogs can swallow fleas during grooming, which can give them tapeworm. If your dog has had fleas, worm them too. Drontal or Milprazon are commonly recommended by UK vets.
